How Else Can I Get Rid of Yard Waste?
While some municipalities do pick up yard waste, there can be many caveats. The biggest being 1) they only come on certain days, 2) you are limited to how much you can dispose of at one time, and 3) there are many constraints on the type of yard waste that you can remove. If you have some free time and a little bit of a green thumb there are alternative options to using our services or municipal waste.
-
Create a Compost Pile - First, choose a shady, well-drained spot in your yard. If you want to keep it more orderly or presentable you can purchase a compost bin. Collect yard waste like grass clippings, leaves, small branches, (plus scraps from the kitchen) and alternate in layers of green and brown materials. To maintain the pile regularly turn it over to aerate it and speed up decomposition. Keep it moist, but not soggy. The resulting compost is an excellent soil enricher.
-
Burn Pile—Wood can be used as a fuel source. Different woods have different properties (heat, smoke, flavor, aroma, duration) that can make them more or less optimal for burning. Research your wood beforehand to see what is optimal for you.
-
Mulch - If you have lots of branches, you can run them through a chipper to create mulch. Spread the mulch around other trees and plants around your home. As the mulch breaks down it will aid in retaining moisture, suppressing weeds, and improving soil quality.
