Why Should I Hire a Junk Removal Company
Pianos are no joke. A baby grand weighs around 500 pounds while concert pianos can nearly triple that at 1400 pounds. For the inexperienced that can be a fast track path to property damage or a hospital visit. Many people underestimate the necessary manpower, logistics, and equipment necessary to safely move a piano. Here are some of the most common reasons people choose to hire versus completing the job themselves.

-
Personal Injury - Most of us have tweaked a muscle or two moving and lifting things much lighter than a piano. When considering possible obstacles such as stairs, tight spaces, and sharp corners, it can become very easy to hurt yourself without the proper equipment and know-how.
-
Awkwardness - Upright pianos represent a best case scenario when moving a piano due to their compactness. However, if you have an organ or grand piano, they can be very awkward and disproportionate in shape and size. Their uneven weight distribution can make them difficult to maneuver.
-
Fragility - Pianos are complex machines made up of many pieces. As such, they are extremely delicate. A hard bump or drop can cause significant damage to your piano. While that may not be troublesome if your piano is in poor condition, it is cause for concern for pianos designated for donation.

How Can I Get Rid Of Old Furniture
It doesn't always make sense to hire a junk removal company. Whether you are constrained by budget or willing to break a sweat there are multiple options to dispose of a piano yourself.

-
Never Do It Alone - No matter how much you have been going to the gym NEVER attempt to move a piano alone.
-
Proper Equipment - Pianos are just plain heavy. If you feel like you don't have enough manpower, you can rent moving equipment. They make moving heavy items much easier. Always check the weight rating before usage. However, piano dollies and sleds can often be more expensive than hiring removal services.
-
Prep for Removal - If possible always disassemble the piano. The more pieces you can break it down into the more maneuverable and lighter it will be. If you are planning to donate, put any hardware into a Ziploc or plastic bag and secure it to the piano so that it can later be reassembled.
-
Prep Home - If you are worried about scuffs or bumps, wrap the corners or any sharp edges to prevent hard contact. You can also put down old cardboard boxes (many stores will be happy to give you free cardboard boxes) or old linens to protect your floors.
-
Disposal - Pianos are big and bulky. Even if you own a pickup truck it is likely not enough to safely transport a piano. Depending on the size, you will need either a trailer or a box truck. If the piano is still in good condition you can donate it. If not - look for the closest county landfill where you can (usually) dump it for free if you are a resident.
